Highlights

This 13-nights safari explores national parks in Tanzania that are off the beaten track. Heading to the Selous Game Reserve first offers a variety of activities including game drives, bush walks and boat safaris. Here you can enjoy watching elephants from the water, listening to hippos from your safari tent, and tracking wild dog in the vehicle. You will then fly to Ruaha National Park – a park home to buffalo herds, leopards and lesser kudu, among many other species. Finally, you will fly over to Mafia Island which is an island south of Zanzibar. This island is known for its mangrove forests, coral reefs, migrating white sharks and tropical archipelagos. The island is completely untouched compared to Zanzibar – a perfect choice for those looking for a low-key tropical end to the safari.

The Selous has fantastic wildlife sightings – particularly with elephant, lion and wild dog.

Day 3 Selous Game Reserve

Siwandu, Selous Game Reserve

The Selous is home to more than half of Tanzania’s elephant population and over 120,000 buffalo. On a game drive, you will definitely come across large herds and on the river, you will likely see elephants swimming or drinking from the river banks.

Day 4 Selous Game Reserve

Siwandu Camp, Selous

Siwandu Camp includes all of your safari activities including game drives, bush walks and boat safaris. An average day on safari includes a morning game activity, some time to relax in camp in the day, and then another safari activity in the afternoon.

Day 5 Ruaha National Park

Jabali ridge, Tanzania

This morning you will be transferred to the airstrip to fly to Ruaha National Park. This is a park famous for its red soil, large baobab trees and huge lion populations. On arrival, you will be met by a representative of Jabali Ridge where you will stay for 3 nights.

Day 6 Ruaha National Park

Leopard

Jabali Ridge is one of the most luxurious lodges in southern Tanzania. It sits in a baobab forest in a fantastic wildlife area – home to elephant herds, lion prides, leopards, wild dog packs and many more. The best time to visit Ruaha is the July to November period, when the park is at its driest.

Day 7 Ruaha National Park

Jabali Ridge

A typical day on safari in Ruaha begins with an early morning game drive. You will be on safari from around 6am – 11am, during which you will have a bush breakfast and coffee overlooking a beautiful view. You will head back to the camp around 11am where you will enjoy a few hours to rest at Jabali Ridge. The lodge has a bush spa, a swimming pool, a library, bar and lounge areas. You will then head back out on safari around 3pm to 7pm, where your safari guide will find a beautiful view to enjoy sundowners at.

Days 8-13 Mafia Island

Shark, Mafia Island

This morning you be transferred to the airstrip to fly to Mafia Island. This is an island south of Zanzibar, off Tanzania’s eastern coast. It is a secluded island, particularly popular with divers as the underwater corals and archipelagos around the island are full of life. Compared to Zanzibar, Mafia Island feels completely untouched, perfect for those who are looking for a low-key retreat.

The Mafia Island Marine Park is definitely the biggest attraction on the island. It has been protected since 1995 and for all divers, it is the place to be. Thousands of fish species, turtles, octopus, rays and sharks are seen in the waters year round. Whale sharks can also be seen on their migratory route past Mafia Island.

Butiama Beach is a comfortable hotel with 13 bungalows offering privacy and space. The lodge is sat on the west coast of the island, with good access to the Marine Park and archipelagos around the island. What we love about Butiama is its casual and relaxed atmosphere. After 6 nights on safari in the southern parks of Tanzania, the tranquillity of Mafia will match the whole itinerary – Off the Beaten Track.

Day 14 Departure

Mafia Island

This morning you will be transferred to Mafia airstrip to fly to Dar es Salaam. Here you will be transferred to the international airport where you will connect onto your international flights home.
