Embark on an unforgettable voyage to Svalbard, where the almost neon blues of thousands of glaciers, the spiky undulations of mountain ranges, the crack of ice against the ship’s bow, and miles of stunning tundra announce your entrance to the Kingdom of the Polar Bear. But Svalbard is truly wild, the domain of not only Polar Bears, but of walrusses, guillemot, arctic foxes, ringed seals, Orcas, and beautiful Beluga Whales. Indulge in shore excursions to see the wildflowers and reindeer of the tundra, peek at the camps left behind by explorers and hunters, and journey through the enchanting beauty of the Norwegian fjords, as you sail close to 80° north. An adventure to Svalbard aboard the Greg Mortimer affords every opportunity to learn, with talks delivered by a world-class expedition team and numerous observation decks, ideal for observing the frozen wonderland just beyond the ship. Disembark for personalized hikes to find viewpoints and local wildlife, dive into the icy underwater realm of Orcas and seals, and explore by Zodiac to brush close to mighty glaciers.

    Greg Mortimer

Utilizing decades of experience to build a ship suited to Antarctic expeditions, the Greg Mortimer benefits from a thoroughly modern design featuring superior comfort and environmentally friendly technology, as well as a focus on stability with the ship’s innovative X-BOW that allows for smoother sailing by cutting through, rather than riding over a wave. This modern approach to expedition sailing carries throughout the public areas with observation decks, a sauna and spa, a library, and hydraulic viewing platforms that afford sailors an exceptionally immersive perspective from which to watch the wildlife of the stunning Patagonian Fjords and the Antarctic.

      Exploring the Svalbard Archipelago

      D3 11 Svalbard ArchipelagoSvalbard Glacier

We’ll spend an enthralling nine days sailing aboard the Greg Mortimer in the Svalbard Archipelago, but because of unpredictable atmospheric conditions (weather, sea, pack-ice, etc., as well as maximizing wildlife opportunities), the itinerary will not be finalized until you’re sailing, chosen by your experienced expedition team, who have years of experience in exploring the Svalbard Archipelago.

While sailing in Svalbard, you’ll have the opportunity to see the luminescent blues of more than 2000 glaciers, magnificent mountain ranges, and a legion of wildlife, including walrusses, whales, seals, and arctic foxes, but none more impressive than the Polar Bear. You’ll explore by Zodiac to get closer to wildlife, hike across the tundra to visit remote human settlements and climb to incredible viewpoints to spot puffins and guillemots nesting on the cliffs. As you sail north of Svalbard, the ship will maneuver between sea ice, a phenomenon that stretches to the North Pole and is best viewed from Greg Mortimer’s excellent viewing platforms, which are ideal points from which to spot wildlife directly from the ship – including polar bears on drift ice. Sea kayaking offers a sublime opportunity to immerse yourself in the Polar waters, rowing closer to glaciers and spotting wildlife at an immersive level. Other activities such as scuba diving, bird watching, onboard lectures delivered by real-life explorers and scientists, and polar plunging (when conditions allow) are all available on the Svalbard Odyssey Polar cruise.

From here, you can either continue your onward journey or join us for an optional extension to your tour with a night or two in beautiful Kirkenes for more Arctic adventure close to the Finnish border.
