About Ryokan Ekoin
Eko-in is a 1,000-year-old Buddhist temple that offers monastic lodging for monks, pilgrims, and tourists alike. Despite being the best-equipped ryokan on Koya-san, accommodation here is still very simple: you are here for the experience, not for creature comforts. All of the guest rooms are tatami-floored, with shoji screen doors and futon bedding, and bathroom facilities are shared. Guests are free to attend (early) morning services, meditation sessions, and the daily Goma fire ritual. WiFi is available in public areas and is free of charge. Meals are served in the guest room at 17:30 and are strictly Buddhist vegetarian cuisine. The key feature of Eko-in is its proximity to the Ichinohashi entrance of the ancient Okuno-in cemetery, a 3-minute walk away, with guests invited to join nightly guided tours of the ‘necropolis’. The ryokan is also close to other ancient Buddhist buildings such as Kongobu-Ji Temple, which is a 10-minute walk away.
