Quinta da Pacheca Overview
Quinta de Pacheca is a wine estate that’s been producing wine since 1551 here in the heart of the Douro Valley. In fact, a stone marker from the 17th-century bears an inscription indicating that the highest quality wine was made here as the only one that could be exported. Today, wine production is still done the old-fashioned way – men crushed the grapes in a stone tank and then aged them in oak barrels. The two dozen guest rooms and a fabulous restaurant also make it a great place to stay while being immersed in Portugal’s popular wine country. Set in a former 18th-century manor house, the hotel overlooks the vineyards along the banks of the Douro River. Ten of the rooms are cabin-style “barrel rooms” where you’ll stay in huge repurposed wine barrels, while the others follow a classic theme with amenities that include free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, and air conditioning.
