Inspiring multi-generational trips
After a year of being apart from loved ones and embracing time with our extended family merely on video calls and Zoom, multi-generational trips are definitely on the forefront of peoples minds. When it is safe to do so, travelling with parents, siblings, grandparents and grandchildren can be an enriching experience.
Of course, the destination will vary with each family. Some may be adventurous and choose to travel to exotic destinations, filling their time with active and bucket-list experiences along the way. For others, a luxury villa with an array of facilities is all that they require. Be it Europe, Asia, Africa or Latin America, we can certainly offer our expert advice and plan your multi-generational trip. For those who want to plan something special, but without a destination in mind, here are some ideas for 2021/22.
Italy
Italy is one of the most popular destinations for multi-generational holidays, and rightly so. The Italian lifestyle welcomes all ages and embraces quality family time. Meal times in particular are embraced – lunch times in the heat of the day, and cooler evenings are spent sitting together outside, eating dinner, sipping drinks and enjoying the slower pace of life. Whilst Italian food goes down wonders with children (with pizza and pasta being two of the most loved meals by kids), the adults can enjoy good wine and local Limoncello. For accommodation, depending on where you travel to in Italy, we would recommend either a large villa or hotel with a range of facilities like a swimming pool, spa and kids club.
Croatia
Home to mountains, lakes, white-sand coastlines and stunning national parks, Croatia offers so much variety in one holiday. For more active multi-generational families, then head to Split and Dubrovnik for a wealth of activities including kayaking, cycling, river canyoning and more. To enjoy these experiences in a safe and hassle-free trip, we offer multi activity Croatia holidays, led by professional and experienced guides. Group sizes can be around 10-16 so if you have a large and active family, this may be a good option. For families who are looking for less action, we can recommend some wonderful accommodation including all-inclusive resorts on idyllic islands.
Kenya
For multi-generational families looking for a once-in-a-lifetime holiday or safari, Kenya is a great option. Safaris are a fantastic way to share a unique experience, and with such thrilling days – early morning game drives watching lions hunt, and afternoons watching elephant herds come down to drink from the waterhole – it’s a family holiday that is hard to beat. There are some wonderful options for multi-generational family accommodation on safari, including Loisaba Starbeds in the Laikipa Plateau, and Cottars Private House in the Masai Mara among others. For children, parents and grandparents, game drives work well on safari and we can arrange a private 4×4 jeep and guide to make the experience even more exclusive.

Greece
Renowned for its spectacular beaches, warm weather and clear, turquoise waters, Greece is a very popular destination for multi-generational families. The Greek islands are especially popular with families who are travelling with younger children or older grandparents. The accommodation is very comfortable – with a great choice of luxury hotels, villas and resorts offering facilities to keep everyone entertained. The food is delicious and the local people are very friendly, kind and accommodating to families. Greece is also a great destination for those in the family who’d like to go off and do day trips. Be it on the ocean, along the coast, or further in land, it’s possible to arrange day trips to mix it up a little.
Portugal
Home to vibrant cities, romantic vineyards and exquisite beaches, Portugal is another destination in Europe that has become particularly attractive for multi-generational families. Of course the Algarve has been popular for a long time, and with a glorious climate and picturesque beaches, it is a destination that will continue to be popular. The Algarve has a range of accommodation options – from larger, all-inclusive hotels (with kids’ clubs and water sports facilities available), to smaller and more intimate villas with stunning views. Portugal is a country that is easily accessible so for families who would like to combine several destinations (for example, a city and a beach destination), we can of course facilitate this.
South Africa
For families looking for a trip suited to wildlife enthusiasts, foodies and adventurers, look no further than South Africa. The reason that South Africa is so great for family safaris is because it is such good value for money and much more affordable than, for example, Botswana or Tanzania. It also has malaria-free safari experiences which, for younger children is ideal. For example, Madikwe National Park (4 hours from Johannesburg by car) is malaria free and offers the Big Five experience. It also homes a wealth of family safari lodges which can accommodate rooms for children, parents and grandparents, sharing a main dining and lounge area together. South Africa is certainly one we would recommend for multi-generational families.
