Beyond Athens, there’s plenty to love about the rest of the mainland too. The Peloponnese is one of the most popular regions with the top areas to explore including Monemvasia, Nafplion and Pylos. Surrounded by the sea on every side, it also boasts many fantastic beaches. Thessonaliki, the second largest city in Greece, sits on the northern fringe of the Thermaic Gulf. Here you’ll never be far from the sea or a sea view and there are some 3,000 years of history to explore, including many monuments that survive from the 4th century. The city is also known for its vibrant culture and numerous annual festivals.

Of course, many come to Greece for the islands. There are 6,000 Greek islands and islets scattered across the country’s seas, with 227 inhabited. They’re an integral part of Greek culture across the ages and while they may have some similarities, each one offers something unique of its own. Parilio is not just a high-design boutique hotel, but an extraordinary piece of island architecture. A member of Design Hotels it was inspired by Cycladic simplicity, made to harmoniously blend with the landscape as a modern version of traditional Cycladic architecture. Local craftsmen were often utilized in its construction, with minimal use of color and marble figurines to capture a sense of “timeless purity.” Colored concrete, including local marble and terracotta floors, create the stage for bespoke furnishings, while features like arches and thick masonry represent traditional building techniques for a sense of sanctuary. It was meticulously thought out and streamlined, but its purpose is the opposite. Guests are meant to meander in a relaxed state of timeless sun and sea. 

Experiences

For those who can’t quite get into the totally relaxed island time state of mind, there’s a soul-soothing Asian spa with one treatment room for beautifying, including manis, pedis and waxing. The other is for stress-melting massages, facials or body scrubs. Keep up with your workout routine at the gym, well-equipped with treadmills, stationary bikes, rowing machines and elliptical machines. Yoga, Pilates, and other group fitness classes are available by booking at the front desk.

The name of the hotel is a combination of Paros and Helios, the Greek sun god. Obviously, you’ll want to pay your respects by soaking up the Aegean sun on one of the loungers that sit next to the huge pool with rock formations built into its sides. If you prefer to unwind in private, book a Sun Suite, the highest-end room category. They sit on the ground floor and come with your own large, private patio, a pool big enough for swimming laps, cushy loungers, and an outdoor dining space.
