Our Luxury Tours of Sri Lanka

The gorgeous tropical island of Sri Lanka has so much to offer visitors. For sheer variety of experience and environment the Pearl of the Indian Ocean easily competes with any destination throughout Asia – or the world. This exciting, enticing destination begs to be explored on a luxurious tailor-made tour…and UTC are here to help!

All tours of the island start and finish at Colombo Airport, from where you have a choice of heading into the city, or recuperating in either the resorts of nearby Negombo beach at a rural inland lodge within touching distance of the airport. From that point on you have the whole island at your disposal: the historical treasures of the interior Cultural Triangle, the dramatic tea-laden scenery of the Hill Country, the rugged natural beauty and tropical wildlife of the island’s many national parks, or endless stretches of postcard perfect coastline.

Our tours will typically be conducted in the company of a private chauffeur-guide – drawn from a select pool – who will escort you around the island throughout your touring days. Along the way you’ll pick up private side guides at major cultural sites – for instance Anuradhapura, or Sigiriya – and have access to private jeeps and trackers for any safari drives. Should you have any extended leisure time during your itinerary your driver will depart and leave you to kick back and enjoy the beach or hills at your own pace.

While Sri Lanka’s beaches are without doubt delightful, they’ll never quite compare with the pure paradise offerings of the Maldives, just an hours’ flight to the southwest. It’s common to combine the touring highlights of Sri Lanka with a jaunt across to a Maldivian island, from where you can enjoy post-tour r&r in unparalleled luxury. There’s a perfect island resort for everyone in the Maldives, so please ask your consultant for their recommendations if this sounds like the ideal option for you.

Sri Lanka Tours Q&A

What are the must-visit places for a first-time tour of Sri Lanka?

A typical first-time loop will start and finish in (or around) capital Colombo, then travel inland to spend a few days exploring the jewels of the Cultural Triangle, before dropping south to the ancient capital, and gateway to the hills, Kandy. From Kandy you can track a path through the dramatic upland scenery of the Hill Country, with treks, tea plantations, and train rides along the way, before dropping down to Yala or Uda Walawe National Parks. It’s then out to the south coast, visiting atmospheric Galle before winding out your trip on a beach near Bentota, Mirissa, or Tangalle.

I want to get off-the-beaten-path – where should I go?

Now you’re talking! Your tour of Sri Lanka will be 80% rural and remote, with little time spent in major towns or cities. As such it’s really not that hard to get away from the beaten path; in fact, by choosing accommodation carefully, you can complete a classic ‘highlights’ loop as outlined above without ever feeling like you’re on any kind of tourist trail. That said, some areas are more off-beat than others, and if you’re planning an adventurous tour, or a second or third visit, please speak to our consultants who’ll have a wealth of ideas. Jaffna and the north, the isolated beaches of the Southeast coast, hikes in the Knuckles range, or jungle activities in Sinharaja are just a few to get you started!

How long do I need for a tour of Sri Lanka?

A typical first-time tour demands at least 12 days to cover all the most important locations. Bulking up to around 14 days (or more) gives that precious extra time to pace the trip and allow for chunks of free time to explore locations such as Galle or Kandy independently. Should you have less time available this can be cut short: a common honeymoon itinerary for instance might be just a week in Sri Lanka, with 3 nights’ apiece in the Cultural Triangle and Hill Country, before heading across to the Maldives for the second week. ‘Grand Tours’ of the island can run for three weeks or more, which would provide enough time for a full circuit heading up as far north as Jaffna all the way down to the deep south beaches of Tangalle.

Does Sri Lanka offer adventure experiences?

Should Sri Lanka’s culture, wildlife, or beaches not be your primary interest then please speak to your consultant about the wide range of adventure activities on offer. Hikes and treks are available across the island, but especially impressive in the Hill Country: whether it’s easy-going day trips such as Ella Rock or Horton Plains, or challenging extended treks in the Knuckles Range or up to Adam’s Peak. Kayaking and white-water rafting are available on the rapids of the Mahaweli River near Kandy; mountain-biking and cycling found in the hills or paddy fields of the interior; or a full range of water sports, diving, and fishing trips available offshore.

Which Sri Lankan beach is for me?

It’s hard to know where to start with this one! As an island destination Sri Lanka is ringed by sandy beaches on all sides. The island’s complicated climate means that not all of these beaches are advised at all times of year, but whenever and wherever you travel you will have some choice on where exactly you kick back and enjoy that beach time. A busy area, packed with bars and shops, such as Negombo or Unawatuna? A secluded cove such as Mawella or Alankuda, where you’ll spend your days in blissful isolation? Family-friendly resort areas (Passekudah, Beruwala) or laidback surf hangouts (Arugam Bay, Hiriketiya)? There’s a lot to get stuck into here, but our specialists will be in hand to ensure whichever beach you choose will be the perfect beach for you.
