When to visit Laikipia Plateau
The best time to visit the Laikipia Plateau is between the June to October period. This is the dry season across Kenya which provides comfortable weather conditions (often warm and plenty of sunshine). This makes the game activities enjoyable, especially if you opt to do horse or camel riding which lasts a couple of hours. This weather also provides good conditions for game viewing, as the grasses are lower. The period of December to March is also a good time to visit, avoiding November, April, and May which are the wettest months of the year.

What activities can I do in the Laikipia Plateau?
One of the main draws to the Laikipia Plateau is the diversity of activities you can do. Unlike most safari destinations – like the Masai Mara Reserve and Samburu National Reserve – where you are only able to do game drives, here in the Laikipia Plateau, you can see the wildlife while horse riding, camel riding, on foot, or even from a helicopter! There are also lots of activities you can do that are not necessarily centered around game viewing, including tubing on the river, waterfall visits, fly camping, and more.
Which is the best safari camp in the Laikipia Plateau?
This depends on what experience you are looking for. There is a mix of accommodation – from luxury tented camps that are beautifully designed, to more traditional ranches with a colonial décor. If you are looking for a camp with a wow-factor view, then we’d highly recommend Lodo Springs or Laikipia Tented Camp. If you want to experience a night under the stars then the sister camp – Laikipia Starbeds – is also fantastic. For those who want something more traditional, and focused on horse riding, then Sosian is a great option to stay in.
Is the Laikipia Plateau good for families?
There are so many activities on offer in the Laikipia Plateau which makes it a great family destination. We can recommend the most suitable safari camp/ lodge for your family based on the age of the children, and the safari guides here are fantastic with children, often with lots of experience guiding families. You will also get the opportunity to do two activities per day (one in the morning and one in the afternoon) which will help keep things diverse and entertaining. If, however, the most important element of the trip is the wildlife itself, I would suggest other destinations like the Masai Mara but the best way to get started would be to get in touch. From there we can find out more about your family and the type of trip you are looking for and can recommend our expertise.
