Laikipia Plateau

Sprawling between the central and northern part of Kenya, the Laikipia is a jaw-dropping expanse of landscape. This huge area is often attractive to those who have been on safari before and are looking for a unique experience off-the-beaten-track. There are small aircraft carriers that fly into the Laikipia Plateau, so it’s easy to get to from places like Nairobi or other safari destinations like the Masai Mara, or Samburu National Reserve.

The Laikipia Plateau is known for a number of things. The first is that with such an enormous area, the views are simply stunning. Some of the safari lodges and camps in this area – like Lodo Springs and Loisaba Tented Camp – sit up on ridges, offering magical views across the rolling hills. These also both have infinity pools that look out across the horizon.

Other camps are located on traditional ranches and farmlands. A lot of these ranches are privately-owned and have been passed down through families and generations. Because of their expansive land, wildlife ranches in the Laikipia Plateau are a delicate blend between conservation, tourism, and traditional cattle ranching. During your stay at the ranches, you can get involved in activities that will give you an insight into each element.

Secondly, there is plenty of opportunity for game viewing in the Laikipia Plateau. It’s worth mentioning that although the wildlife in the Laikipia Plateau is good, it is not comparable with somewhere like the Masai Mara, which is much denser in-game. The real advantage to this area though, is that there is so much more variety of game viewing activities. In most safari camps here, you can do game drives (day and night), horse riding, camel riding, walking safaris, and more. For children too, there are activities like kayaking, swimming, and fishing.
