Our Luxury Tours of Japan

All of our tours of Japan are completely bespoke and tailor-made to your requirements. Although many tours will include the same or similar destinations – Tokyo, Kyoto, Hakone, Hiroshima, Osaka – we know that each client is unique and we’ll always strive to make your tour of Japan distinctive to you.

This is where our specialists come in. Not only do our experts have extensive first-hand knowledge of Japan, they also have their fingers on the pulse and are always eager to learn more. We’re continually on the lookout for the next big hotel opening, the latest rail link opening up a whole new region, or the sharpest new activity provider bringing a fresh angle on their city. This knowledge and enthusiasm is then poured straight into your itinerary.

It’s always useful to have a starting point though, so with that in mind we’ve created a selection of sample itineraries. These showcase what we believe to be the most effective routes for specific lengths of time – 7, 10, 14 days – and also present a variety of tours and accommodation options on offer in each location.

These itineraries can be booked ‘off the peg’, or – most commonly – used as a template. Once we’ve taken the time to get to you know we can then add that extra day here, a side trip there…there’s this great walking tour we know you’d love, and this ryokan will be the perfect place to relax..

Japan Tours Q&A

How long should my tour of Japan be?

There’s enough in Japan to travel for a month or more and still find surprises on each new day. Generally however we find clients travelling for anything between a short but sweet 7 days, to a comprehensive 21. A compact Japan highlights tour covering Tokyo, Kyoto, and perhaps Kanazawa or Hakone, can be achieved in 7 nights. Up to 10 could see you include Hiroshima and Osaka, while a Japanese grand tour round 14 days would allow time to begin straying into the Alps, Mount Koya, or Shikoku.

How far in advance should I book my tour?

For certain periods it is very important to book in good time. Tours during cherry blossom season – March to May – should be booked at least 9 months in advance to secure first choice accommodation and guides, longer still if you’re keen to travel during the absolute peak weeks of late March and early April. Summer holidays in August, Christmas holidays in December, and the national ‘Golden Week’ holidays in early May are busy times for domestic tourism so again need a healthy lead time to avoid missing out on preferred hotels.

Isn’t Japan expensive for private touring?

Despite Japan’s reputation as a costly destination, at UTC we’ve travelled extensively throughout the country and know that this simply does not have to be the case. By taking a more thoughtful approach, and employing a little ingenuity, we’ve developed a style of operation which ensures we provide our usual exemplary standard of service, without passing on sky high costs. This involves a little more independence and self-guiding than our tours in other parts of Asia, but backed up with exceptionally comprehensive travel documents, meticulous planning from our specialists, and first-class assistance from our local representatives as you move through your trip.

So…how do we get around in Japan?

It’s common that you wouldn’t have any assistance for city-to-city journeys…but that need not be daunting! Included in our package will be your train tickets, or rail passes if applicable, metro transport cards covering inner city transfers, and perhaps a short taxi transfer if you prefer. The self-guiding directions in your pack will be exhaustive, backed up with street-level maps leading you to and from your hotels. We’ll also structure the itinerary such that you’ll always have had time with a guide or local representative prior to any such journeys so you can run past them any queries you might have.

What are your guides like?

As with most Japanese – thoughtful, knowledgeable, and good fun! All our guides are certified by the JTGS (Japan Tour Guide Service) and are enthusiastic, well-experienced, and genuine local experts. They will help you get to monuments before the crowds, unlock the secrets of a hidden neighbourhood, or provide invaluable assistance with general queries – topping up a transport card, getting to the train station, locating a specialist souvenir, or finding out what the local speciality is and which place does it best. We’re also always careful to match guests and guides accordingly: some guides are especially good with families for example, while others have a particular flair for history, food, or hiking.
