Kokuya Ryokan Shibu Onsen Overview

This traditional Japanese-style inn is located in the heart of Shibu Onsen, a hot spring town famous for its monkeys that enjoy bathing in the springs during snowy winters. Established in 1625, it’s one of the country’s oldest hotels, currently run by the 16th generation of owners. It’s the only ryokan accommodation in the area with a half-dozen natural hot springs, eight baths and 10 rooms that include open-air baths. All guest rooms are traditional, with tatami floor mat beds, a yukata (light robe) and your own private onsen that sits on a patio overlooking a koi pond. Each room also has a TV, safe, refrigerator, toilet and sink. There is a total of nine indoor baths with 16 tubs, fed by the property’s six own hot spring sources, and guests also get a key to all the onsens in town. Full course kaiseki meals are served, all made from local, seasonal ingredients.
