Offering traditional elegance in a Japanese inn that includes a traditional wooden building and cottages that date back to 1900, plus a modern annex, Iwaso is the oldest and most famous lodging on Miyajima Island. It’s drawn VIPs from across the globe, from famous artists and authors to royalty. Located just a few minutes on foot from the iconic Itsukushima Shrine in a beautiful part of Momijidani Park, it was constructed in “miya-daiku” style,” by the same craftsmen who built Japanese shrines. While the oldest rooms in the original building, Honkan have the most character, you’ll get a private bath by booking a room in the Shinkan. Each one includes futons and tatami mats; some boast river views. The annex rooms have more modern conveniences like flat-screen TVs, tea and coffeemakers, mini-fridges and en-suite facilities. It includes a communal hot spring bathhouse, complimentary breakfasts, and traditional Kyoto-style meals for dinner.
