Naples
A glorious city with tattered beauty has been called what may be the last great metropolis of western Europe, with its monuments, though often in decay, can still be seen in their popular context, with tourism distractions. Tucked between two areas of volcanic activity, most famously Mount Vesuvius to the east, which watches over the city, its port is one of Europe’s most important. It was long considered not much more than a steppingstone to Amalfi or Capri, but the Museo Archeologico contains an extraordinary collection of antiquities. The social scene, art, baroque architecture, and rich culture offer plenty of charms for visitors.
