This riverside hotel, a modern take on the traditional ryokan, is accessed via a small wooden paddleboat, made up of a series of century-old buildings inspired by traditional Japanese homes in the Arashiyama district, famous for its bamboo forests. It’s close to the top cherry blossom viewing spots and surrounded by everything from seasonally blooming cherry trees to the Momiji maples with their red autumnal hues. Enjoy the true Japanese art of hospitality with relaxation taking the stage. Every morning stretching classes are held in the Hidden Garden, while introductory incense ceremonies can be enjoyed in the tatami mat room. There’s a Floating Tea Room and a Library and Lounge filled with paper lanterns. A Zen-inspired program is offered along with in-room massages. The on-site restaurant has been called “a nirvana for foodies,” while Japanese breakfasts are delicious and served in your room which overlooks the river and wildlife like monkeys and deer.
