Located on the tip of the African continent, South Africa is one of the most desirable destinations for a honeymoon, and rightly so. Home to breath-taking mountain ranges, vibrant cities, and picturesque winelands, all inside the beautiful coastline that hugs the southern and eastern border. If that wasn’t enough though, South Africa is home to expansive national parks and private reserves that can be enjoyed by a luxury safari. Each reserve has its own draws, but as a whole, South Africa boasts reliable sightings of the Big Five – the elephant, the lion, the leopard, the buffalo, and the rhino.

The beauty of a South African honeymoon is that you can include as much, or as little as you like. If combining a luxury safari, a few days exploring Cape Town and the vineyards, hiking in the Drakensberg mountain range, and finishing in a secluded spot on the beach is what you’re after, we can do that. Alternatively, if you’d rather focus on one or two destinations, this is also possible. Whatever level of adventure or luxury you’re looking for; our specialists can certainly advise.

When to Visit South Africa

South Africa can be visited and enjoyed year-round. That said, each region has its own localized best time to visit. The summer (and therefore the warmest time) in South Africa is between December and March. This is the most appealing time to visit Cape Town and the Western and Eastern Cape, especially for those who live in the UK or the US to escape and get some winter sun. This period on safari can be hot and humid, and the grasses tend to be much thicker which is worth noting. The period between June and September is arguably the best for a South Africa safari in destinations like the Kruger National Park, Sabi Sand Reserve, and Madikwe and this is because the vegetation is sparser which makes the game viewing a little more reliable. However, mornings and evenings will be cooler as it is the winter season. The shoulder seasons of Spring and Autumn are a great compromise if you are traveling to several destinations across South Africa.

South Africa Honeymoon Q&A

How much is a South Africa honeymoon?

Of course this depends on which destinations you combine, but South Africa is one of the most affordable destinations in Africa. The safari element (if you are including one) will be the most expensive part of the trip but there are some really great and affordable reserves you can visit, especially in the eastern cape. If you are combining a South Africa safari and a Cape Town/Winelands visit, a good budget is around the $3-4,000 per person mark. All of our honeymoon tours are private and customized to you, so we can suggest particular properties based on your budget.

Can I do a Cape Town and private safari honeymoon in South Africa?

Absolutely! Splitting your time between the bustling city of Cape Town and a wilder experience in the bush is very popular for a South Africa honeymoon. As all of our tours are private, we can also organize any excursions you’d like to do in Cape Town. Some of the most popular tours include a Cape Peninsula tour (where you can visit the penguins at Boulders Beach), a food and wine tour, and a guided hike up Table Mountain. We will also help organize the domestic flights or logistics between the city and safari.

Which are the best hotels for a South Africa honeymoon?

The great thing about South Africa is that you can experience the ultimate luxury without a huge price tag, that other destinations across Africa have. Of course, it comes down to personal taste, but we work with a collection of smaller, boutique hotels across the country that are excellent for honeymooners as they offer privacy and that attention to detail.

What special experiences can we do for your honeymoon?

There are so many special and unforgettable experiences across the country. On safari, we can organize private candlelit dinners or romantic sundowners in the bush. Some safari lodges also have private decks where you can sleep out under the stars – just the two of you. If you’re looking for more adventurous experiences, we can organize things like helicopter rides over Cape Town, shark-cage diving, or private wine-tasting experiences in beautiful vineyards. The possibilities are endless – and it’s our pleasure to go above and beyond to help organize these for you!
