Mauritius lies in the middle of the Indian Ocean, two thousand miles off the southeast African coast. It’s home to breathtaking white sandy beaches, lagoons in brilliant shades of turquoise, sugar cane fields, lush forests, and volcanic hills while offering lots for wildlife enthusiasts. Under the clear blue water, you might spot everything from clownfish, angelfish, and parrotfish to turtles, rays, octopus, and gray reef sharks. On land, there are Aldabra giant tortoises, while birdwatchers can keep an eye out for over 100 different species across the tropical rainforests, including the Mauritius parakeet.

While you can always sunbathe on the beach or lounge around the pool, a wide range of activities can also be enjoyed during a Mauritius honeymoon. Enjoy everything from mountain hikes and watersports like snorkeling, diving, waterskiing, and windsurfing to boat tours. Day trips are possible to nearby islands beyond the reef like Flat Island, Gunner’s Coin, and Ilot Gabriel where you can walk around the entire deserted isle in less than an hour. You’ll find plenty of honeymoon-worthy resorts too, many of which offer spas for indulging in a decadent massage, while dining often includes delectably fresh seafood like lobster enjoyed under one of the world’s best night skies.

Where to Go in Mauritius

When to Visit Mauritius

Mauritius enjoys an enviable climate with lots of sun, blue skies, and warm temperatures, making it popular for a honeymoon getaway with time spent on the beach enjoyable in any season. There is a distinct dry and wet season, with higher temperatures and rain in the summer (November through April here in the Southern Hemisphere). January through March are the wettest, so if you want to enjoy off-season benefits and decent weather, come in November or April. May through October are slightly cooler and drier, the peak tourist time. If you visit during this period be sure to book well in advance.
