The Russian Federation’s largest city is lively, crowded and somewhat mysterious, with busy streets, yet also incredibly picturesque and fascinating. After checking into your hotel and taking time to refresh, you might want to head straight into the heart of the action. You’ll find a variety of eye-catching architectural styles on every corner, along with impressive, historical and modern art museums. There are also many eateries serving national cuisine, from budget to Michelin-starred.
Day 2 Moscow: Private Sightseeing Tour
This morning you’ll be met by a private guide for a tour of the city. Explore Red Square, jam-packed with history, featuring everything from Lenin’s tomb to St. Basil’s Cathedral, one of Russia’s cultural symbols. You’ll travel to the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour and the Novodevich Convent Cemetery which serves as the final resting place for many renowned Russian figures too. Marvel at the glittering chandeliers and beautiful frescoes that adorn the elaborate Moscow Metro stations and then enjoy the rest of the day to explore at your own pace, perhaps visiting GUM shopping mall, an architectural wonder ideal for window shopping.
Day 3 Moscow: Kremlin Territory Tour
The Kremlin Territory is considered a must-visit, located in Moscow’s historical core. While two-thirds is closed off to visitors, the other third is home to precious collections that tourists can enjoy. Your private guide will bring you through this complex, starting at the State Armoury. Russia’s oldest museum, it’s filled with priceless artifacts that include a remarkable collection of Faberge eggs. You’ll see Cathedral Square, the famous site of funeral processions of all Grand Dukes, patriarchs and Russian tsars, as well as one of the Kremlin’s cathedrals. Enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure, perhaps sampling the buzzing nightlife this evening.
Day 4 St. Petersburg: Transfer by Train from Moscow
While you’ll say farewell to Moscow this afternoon, you’ll have the morning to enjoy some of the city’s most impressive works of art – it’s renowned for some of the world’s best. Discover pre-revolutionary Russian art and Russian icons at the Tretyakov Gallery and the check out the Picassos, Botticellis and other famous pieces at the Pushkin Fine Arts Museum. Afterwards you’ll leave Moscow, boarding a first-class carriage on the train, bound for St. Petersburg, about a four-hour journey. The cultural capital, it’s often compared to Venice, referred to as the Venice of the North, and its grandeur never fails to impress.
Day 5 St. Petersburg: Guided City Tour
Today you’ll meet our local guide for a tour of this sophisticated city founded in 1703 by Peter the Great. Its historic center reveals picturesque canals lined by grand Italianate mansions in between dazzling plazas with neoclassical and baroque palaces. You’ll visit the remarkable Hermitage in Winter Palace which houses three million works of art in a half-dozen spectacular buildings. During the driving part of your tour, you’ll witness sights like Vasilevsky Island, Palace Square and Nevsky Prospect. Enjoy the rest of the day on your own, perhaps catching a beautiful Russian folkdance performance at Nikolaevsky Palace this evening.
Day 6 St. Petersburg: Peterhof Day Trip
Journey just outside of the city to the Peterhof today. Russia’s own version of Versailles, it was built by Peter the Great in the 18th-century and includes palaces, fountains and gardens, all listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. One of the top attractions for visitors to St. Petersburg, the Grand Palace will open early for you so that you can avoid the crowds that arrive during regular business hours. You’ll get an excellent glimpse of the decadent lifestyle the Russian emperor enjoyed, rivalling or surpassing that of other European royalty, before returning to St. Petersburg by hydrofoil to enjoy the evening.
Day 7 St. Petersburg: Pushkin Tour
On your last full day, your guide will bring you on a journey south of St. Petersburg to Peterhof , the estate of Tsarskoe Selo, a gift from Peter the Great to his wife Catherine. The complex of palaces and parks includes the baroque-style Catherine Palace, set within the beautiful landscaped gardens of Catherine Park. It features ornate staterooms, like the Amber Room, a standout with gold leaf, mirrors and amber panels. The adjacent Alexander Park is home to a cemetery for royal horses, decorative bridges and the colonnaded 18th-century Alexander Palace. After returning to the city, enjoy it at your leisure.
