Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1 Reykjavik: Arrival into Keflavik Airport; Capital City Tour

Iceland, Reykjavik

Upon your arrival to Keflavik International Airport, you’ll be met by private transfer for the approximately 45-minute drive to your accommodation in the capital city. Get settled in and then join a tour, starting at Hallgrimskirkja Church, the best way to get your bearings and a spectacular view over Reykjavik, its many colourful buildings and mountains, from 244 feet above. Explore the museum and archaeological ruins at the Settlement Exhibition for a glimpse of early life, discover the city’s many colourful street murals, and be sure to try a hot dog at the internationally famous hot dog vendor, Bæjarins Beztu.

Day 2 Vik: Travel to Vik via the Golden Circle

Gullfoss, Iceland

Your guide will pick you up for a tour that begins by travelling the Golden Circle, a magnificent 124-mile-long scenic route with multiple popular attractions along the way. Your first stop is Geysir in Haukadalur Valley. Strokkur geyser puts on the biggest show, exploding with water that shoots up 100 feet in the air every 10 minutes. Enjoy some time on your own admiring the breathtaking and iconic Gullfoss Falls before leaving the Golden Circle for the South Coast, stop at Seljalandsfoss waterfall to walk behind the cascades before continuing to the town of Vik.

Day 3 Hofn: Black Sand Beaches, the Glacier Lagoon and an Icy Hike

Vik, Iceland

Waking up in Vik, walk its famous black sand beach where incredible rock formations rise from the sea just offshore. While your destination tonight is Hofn, there is a lot to see first. Discover the Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon via Zodiac boat where crystal-clear turquoise water reflects the icebergs floating by, some of which carry are carrying seals. Listen to the thundering sounds as they constantly break off the glacier, drift through a short river and into the sea. Waves turn some back onto the black sands where they lie scattered like gems. Afterwards, your guide will give your crampons for a fascinating glacier walk.

Day 4 Lake Myvatn: Craggy Lava Fields, Spectacular Geothermal Features and the Tranquil Nature Baths

Lake Myvatn, Iceland

From Hofn, make you way toward the craggy lava field at Dimmuborgir for a stunning view of Mount Bulandstindur. Follow the walking trails to see the castle-like formations, the result of thousands of years of volcanic activity. As you make your way to Lake Myvatn, you’ll notice the landscape begins to look like something out of a sci-fi film. This region is filled with unique rock formations, moss-grown lava fields and volcanic craters, when you reach the Hverir geothermal area, stop to see the steaming fumaroles and boiling mud pools. Soak in the Lake Myvatn Nature Baths, a tranquil alternative to the Blue Lagoon.

Day 5 Akureyri: Spectacular Waterfalls and the Capital of the North

Godafoss waterfall, Iceland

Leaving behind the alien-like landscape of Lake Myvatn, travel toward Iceland’s northern capital, Akureyri. If you’re up for a short, steep hike, climb to the top of Hverfell Crater and walk around the rim and then continue to Godafoss, the “Waterfall of the Gods,” with the roaring turquoise hinged falls nearly 100 feet wide and 40 feet high. From there, head to Akureyri’s picturesque center to purchase Icelandic items and sample local cuisine, often a fusion of ingredients from Icelandic farmers and fishermen. There are plenty of eateries, bars and shops, giving Akureyri more buzz than any place outside of Reykjavik.

Day 6 Reykjavik: Icelandic Horse Riding in Skagafjordur

Skagafjordur, Iceland

Make your back to Reykjavik today, with several stops along the way, first in historic Skagafjördur, known for its time-honoured relationship with horses. Enjoy a locally guided horse-riding tour on the unique Icelandic horse, famous for its small size, strength, intelligence and unusual extra gaits, making for a smooth, comfortable ride. Trott along the banks of glacial rivers and on a black sand beach. Afterwards, continue to Europe’s largest hot spring, Deildartunguhver where the water boils over the red rocks. Nearby is historic Reykholt, home of the 13th-century poet, writer, and scholar Snorri Sturluson, where you can learn more about his life and work.

Day 7 Departure Day: Reykjanes Peninsula Tour; Return Flight Home

Reykjanes Peninsula, Iceland

Waking up in Reykjavik, you might enjoy an early morning stroll for coffee while soaking up your last moments in the Iceland capital. Your guide will meet you at your hotel after breakfast for a tour of the Reykjanes Peninsula with its seaside villages along the volcanic shoreline. Interesting traditional cooking methods here, and elsewhere in Iceland, utilise the geothermal properties to cook fish, boil eggs, bake bread and more. You’ll see the Giantess in the mountain, built by a local art collective inspired by author Herdis Eglisdottir’s children’s book before making your way to Keflavik Airport to catch your flight home.
