Let Us Plan Your Travel to the Galapagos Islands

The Galapagos Islands entice travelers, particularly wildlife enthusiasts, from around the world as one of the best places on Earth to get up close to everything from sea lions and penguins to giant tortoises and blue-footed boobies. Located 600 miles off the Ecuador mainland, this one-of-a-kind destination is a microcosm of evolution. Remote and isolated, the archipelago is made up of 21 islands, 13 of which can be visited. The unique and fearless creatures here provided much of the inspiration for Charles Darwin’s Theory of Natural Selection.

Charles Darwin’s visit to the Galapagos is not only what put the archipelago in the spotlight, it had a powerful impact on how he formed the Theory of Natural Selection. In 1831, he set off on a 5-year voyage for South America from England and decided to stop in the Galapagos after he surveyed its coasts. While there, Darwin noticed that the creatures on each island were unique, but all very well-adapted to their environments.

The Galapagos landscapes are mostly volcanic and barren, though some have more vegetation than others. As the islands were never linked to the mainland, to get there, species had to have flow, swam, or floated there. Because larger mammals at the top of the food chain were unable to make the journey, the lack of predators allowed wildlife to thrive. Many animals here never learned to fear humans and seem almost tame, allowing visitors to walk among the Galapagos giant tortoise as well as swim alongside marine iguanas and sea lions.

I really want to see a particular species on my trip, can I ensure I do?

If you really want to see anything in particular, please let your consultant know. The islands are all very different and some wildlife is only found on certain islands. We will recommend the right itinerary for you once we have chatted with you about what you would like to see. In addition, some species are seasonal and are only in the Galapagos during certain months of the year.

Can I explore the islands independently?

The Galapagos National Park strictly controls the number of visitors allowed into the area to protect the delicate ecosystem. The National Park Authorities requires anyone entering the national park to be accompanied by a licensed Naturalist Guide. All boat routes and day tours are controlled by the park authorities to ensure there are not too many people at any location at once. The National Park pre authorises all landings within the national park. Each boat has a set date they can land on a particular island.

What should I pack?

There are small shops on the main islands of San Cristobal and Santa Cruz but they are expensive and have limited choice, it is best to bring everything you need with you from home.

We recommend you pack walking shoes for the island excursions, flip flops for the boats, lots of sunscreen and a hat. This is quite an active destination, no fancy clothes required!

Is it a good honeymoon destination?

The Galapagos is not a typical honeymoon destination but for an adventurous couple who love wildlife and diving, it is perfect! There are some exceptionally luxurious yachts where you can enjoy incredible sunsets and visit idyllic beaches. You will usually visit two sites a day and there are ample opportunities to experience the islands by hiking, swimming or kayaking.
