Day by Day Itinerary
Day 1 Cape Town Arrival
Your family adventure through South Africa begins with your arrival into Cape Town International Airport. You will be met on arrival by your driver and transferred to your hotel.
The Radisson Red has a great location, right in the heart of the Cape Town Waterfront. The hotel is perfect for families, the rooms have built-in bunk beds for the kids, super-fast Wi-Fi and smart TVs to ensure your family have access to as much technology as they need. The hotel has a very relaxed, informal atmosphere. The rooms have views of Table Mountain and a roof top pool.
Our suggestions for the afternoon are – visit the Two Oceans Aquarium, shopping for arts and crafts at the large Watershed Market, or embark on a sunset harbor cruise. This evening, dine with a sunset view at one of the family-friendly restaurants in the area.
Day 2 Cape Peninsula Tour
Your Cape Peninsula Tour will be tailor made to meet the needs of you and your family, this is just an example of a tour.
Get an early start to your day which begins by watching for baboons, Cape mountain zebra and other wildlife at Cape Point. Journey north to Simon’s Town for a seafood lunch (excluded), then explore the African penguin sanctuary at Boulders Beach for a close encounter with the sea birds before paddling out in a sea kayak to watch them dive for their meal.
Some suggestions for the afternoon include – visit the farm animals at Kommetjie Imhoff Village, play paintball, go horseback riding on the beach, or take a coastal train ride.
Day 3 Winelands Tour
Your Winelands tour will be tailor made to meet the needs of you and your family, this is just an example of a tour.
You will explore the history, the wine and the architecture of the region. The region is most famous for its red wine – there is however some great white wine found on the higher slopes of the mountains. Our recommendation for today would be to concentrate on the Stellenbosch wine region and to select two wineries in this region based on your wine tastes. Many wine estates will offer kids chocolate tasting or juice tasting while you taste wine.
Lunch is usually planned in this region as it is the foodie haven of the country. For families we can recommend places with activities such as falconry or feeding the local ducks. There are some lovely gourmet picnics where the kids can run through the vineyards.
Some ideas for after lunch would be: a visit to Paarl or Franschhoek for another wine tasting or a walk through the town of Franschhoek or a walk in an organic garden on the wonderful Babylonstoren. (Lunch is additional cost)
Day 4 Hermanus
This morning a rental car will be delivered to your hotel. You will be briefed by our local representative on driving in South Africa as well as receiving a GPS unit and map. You will then you will make your way up the coast to the small town of Hermanus.
Hermanus has some of the best whale watching in the world. From July to December there are Southern Right and Humpback whales just off the coast of the Western Cape. Hermanus has very deep water close to shore, making the sightings spectacular. There is also the opportunity to go shark cage diving with Great White Sharks. Hermanus has an inland lagoon next to an 8km beach, the perfect place to spend an afternoon.
You will spend two nights at the Harbour Square Suites, each suite comes with a fully equipped kitchen and living area. The suites have stunning views of the bay with a private balcony with seating. There is a roof top pool for the family to enjoy. The hotel is in the heart of Hermanus with easy access to all the attractions.
Day 5 Marine Boat Trip
Today you will join a boat trip to explore the marine wildlife. Trip length is between 2 and 2.5 hours, depending on sightings and weather conditions. You will visit Dyer Island which is located 8 km from shore and is home to African penguins. You will also explore Geyser Rock, home to a 60,000 strong Cape fur seal colony. The boat trip will take you between Dyer Island and Geyser Rock known as the world famous ‘Shark Alley’ to try and spot some Great White Sharks. The boat will then head to whale hot-spots in the bay.
Day 6 Plettenberg Bay
Today you will continue your journey up the coast, along the famous Garden Route. You will spend three days in Plettenberg Bay enjoying the beautiful beach and the many activities on offer in the area.
The Robberg Beach Lodge is a tranquil beach side haven with a relaxed family friendly atmosphere. This luxury guesthouse is located on the beautiful Robberg Beach.
Day 7 - 9 Plettenberg Bay
Families can spend days on the beach but there are so many attractions close to Plettenberg Bay. Here are a few suggestions:
The Knysna Elephant Park is sanctuary for elephants who have been orphaned or rescued. They run educational tours of the park daily.
The Robberg Nature Reserve has beautiful hikes.
You can swim and kayak on the Keurbooms River.
Tsitsikamma National Park has a wide range of outdoor activities including mountain biking, hikes and a tree top canopy tour.
Day 10 Amakhala Private Game Reserve
Today you will leave Plettenberg Bay and drive up the coast to the game viewing areas.
Hlosi Game Lodge is in the malaria free Amakhala Private Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape. The lodge is located on a hill with panoramic views over the reserve. This fenced camp is perfect for families with small children, or for those who aren’t comfortable with a chance-meeting with wild animals. You can watch the wildlife from the privacy of your own viewing deck or your bath tub. The family suites are specially designed to have two inter leading bedrooms and a private deck.
Day 11 Hlosi Lodge, Amakhala Private Game Reserve
While you are at Hlosi Lodge you will enjoy morning and afternoon game drives in this 18000 acre reserve. You will head out in an open top 4×4 safari vehicle with a qualified game ranger. The rangers know the reserve and wildlife and they are constantly in touch, sharing information on sightings and the animals movements.
The reserve is a Big 5 reserve (lion, elephant, leopard, rhino and buffalo) as well as cheetah, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, monkeys, tortoise and plenty of antelope species. You might be lucky and see some of the more elusive and shy animals like hyena or bat eared fox.
Day 12 Hlosi Lodge, Amakhala Private Game Reserve
In addition to morning and afternoon game drives the lodge runs a ‘Cubs on Safari’ program specially for children. On arrival the club coordinator will meet with you to talk about what activities your children would enjoy.
They offer arts and crafts, kids game drives, movie nights and sports. The lodge also has babysitters available and special child friendly menus.
Day 13 Depart
Today you will enjoy your morning game drive and breakfast before driving to Port Elizabeth Airport. You will return your rental car and check in for your onward flight.
