Day by Day Itinerary
Day 1 Lisbon: Arrival into Lisbon, Portugal
Your 11-nights journey through the highlights of Portugal and Spain begins in the capital city of Lisbon. After landing at the airport, your private driver will welcome you and transfer you to your hotel. You’ll have the rest of the day to relax and unwind, although getting out to stretch your legs is always a good idea after a long flight. See the beautiful historic center, medieval castles, hilly waterfront neighbourhoods with centuries-old pastel-hued buildings and the old cable cars that wind up the cobbled roads. Get a flavor of the city by sampling the tasty traditional cuisine, like bifano, a quintessential street food.
Day 2 Lisbon: Private City Tour
Get to know the heart of the city by following an expert local guide on a three-hour walking tour this morning. You’ll learn about the local lore and history while visiting many highlights. See the high-end shopping area around Chiado Square, the 12th-century Lisbon Cathedral, the city’s oldest and the central square, Rossio. One of the main plazas in the country ever since the Middle Ages. Visit the famous Praca do Comercio square that lies along the banks of the Tagus Rive,r home of the 18th-century triumphal arch, Arco da Rua Augusta, ending with a tasting of Portugal’s signature liquor, Ginjinha.
Day 3 Porto: Transfer to Porto Touring Coimbra Along the Way
Meet your private driver/guide at your hotel this morning for transfer to Porto, stopping to tour Coimbra along the way. While most visitors to Portugal pass it by, they’re missing one of its most stunning cities. Set atop a hill, it overlooks the Mondego River, featuring an enchanting medieval Old Town with a 12th-century Romanesque cathedral, Se Velha. As you see the sights, your expert guide will reveal tidbits about the local lore and history. After touring, your guide will drop you off at an outstanding local eatery for lunch and you’ll have more time to explore on your own before continuing to Porto.
Day 4 Porto: City Tour
Start your day by touring UNESCO-listed Porto with an expert local guide, learning more about the city’s rich history which can be seen in the architecture and streets. In the historic center, highlights include the largest and most impressive square in Porto, Praca da Liberdade, the 18th-century baroque-style Igreja dos Clerigos church, Gomes Teixeria Square and the main shopping thoroughfare, Rua Santa Carina. From there visit the iconic railway station, Sao Bento, and the riverfront Ribeira neighbourhood which is Porto’s lively nightlife. Your guide will provide suggestions for enjoying the remainder of the day after dropping you off at a popular eatery for lunch.
Day 5 Porto: Douro Valley Day Trip & River Cruise
This morning you’ll take an exciting day trip to one of Europe’s top wine regions, the Douro Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site that produces some of Portugal’s finest wines. Your private driver/guide will bring you on a full day tour through the heart of the region, including a visit to a winery. Wander through the production facilities, vineyards and taste the wine before enjoying traditional Portuguese fare for lunch, followed by another tasting. Afterwards, travel by riverboat, enjoying an hour-long cruise on the serene Duoro River, relaxing while surrounded by the gorgeous scenery of rolling hills and lush valley along its banks.
Day 6 Madrid: Flight to Spain’s Capital
Saying farewell to Portugal today, take private transfer to the airport in Porto to catch your flight to Madrid. Upon arrival, a private driver will welcome you in and transfer you to your accommodation. After getting settled in, take a stroll around the diverse city to see some of the sights or explore the many top-notch art galleries and museums. Be sure to sample Madrid’s world-class gastronomic scene and then perhaps head to a music venue to catch a live show, or the theater, with lots of options that showcase musical productions and plays, including Gran Via, the city’s answer to Broadway.
Day 7 Madrid: City Tour & El Prado Museum Visit
Follow your private guide on a four-hour walking tour of Madrid’s highlights, adapted to your style and pace. Choose to visit as many places as possible or embark on a more leisurely stroll. Possibilities include the Royal Palace and the 16th-century Madrid de los Austrias, home to one of the country’s most impressive squares, Plaza Maylor. After your tour, enjoy a visit to the remarkable El Prado museum which showcases one of the world’s most impressive collections of European art, including works by Goya, El Greco and Velazquez. Your guide will point out top exhibits before leaving you to explore on your own.
Day 8 Madrid: Day Trip to Toledo
A day trip to historic Toledo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, will be enjoyed today with your private driver/guide picking you up for the one-hour-long drive. In the 16th century, the city was the capital of Spain and it boasts a dramatic setting atop a gorge that overlooks Rio Tajo along with a mix of Jewish, Christian and Muslim faiths that can be seen in the architecture. Like an open-air museum, discover historic landmarks like the former Roman palace, Alcazar de Toledo, a 12th-century Moorish synagogue, the majestic 13th-century Toledo Cathedral and the 12th-century Church of Santo Tome while strolling the cobbled streets.
Day 9 Barcelona: Transfer by Train; Optional Yacht Excursion
Journey to Barcelona, your final destination, leaving this morning by high-speed train. Upon arrival to the Mediterranean coastal city, a private driver will bring you to your hotel. After getting settled in, soak up some of lively energy, rich history and culture on your own, starting with a visit to the 1,988-foot-high Mount Montjuic which overlooks the port. By riding the Montjuic Cable Car, it will bring you to the 17th-century Castle Montjuic for a panoramic vista of the city. You may want to visit Poble Espanyol, an open-air museum with more than 100 recreated buildings constructed like a traditional Spanish village.
Day 10 Barcelona: Park Guell & Sagrada Familia Tour
A half-day tour, led by a local guide will bring you to marvel at renowned Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi’s most impressive work, Park Guell and Sagrada Familia. Begin at the park which is spread over 42 acres on Carmel Hill, bring many vantage points for spectacular views of the city along with fascinating buildings that showcase the boundary-pushing modernist style Gaudi is known for including a magnificent dragon adorned in brilliant colourful tiling. Sagrada Familia is an iconic Roman Catholic basilica. It was constructed in an impressive mix of art nouveau, gothic and Catalan-modernism styles. After lunch enjoy time to explore on your own.
Day 11 Begur: Hike the Costa Brava
Your private driver/guide will pick you up for the 90-minute drive to the famous Costa Brava this morning, a gorgeous stretch of coastline between Barcelona and the French border. It’s ideal for hiking, with trails that traverse secluded beaches hidden coves for swimming and snorkelling, and charming coastal villages. Your guide will choose a route best suited to your fitness level and you’ll head out for a trek along the seaside cliffs, with the turquoise Mediterranean on one side and oak trees and olive tree groves on the other. At the end, your reward is a three-course meal made up of local Catalan dishes.
Day 12 Departure
After discovering the highlights of Portugal and Spain, your memorable tour comes to an end today. You’ll have time to fuel up for your journey home with breakfast before your private driver picks you up for transfer to Barcelona. From there you’ll either catch a train from the rail station or catch a flight from the airport to connect with your onward journey. There are plenty other travel experiences if you want to continue, otherwise we look forward to seeing you next time.
