    Panama City

    Besides being a central hub for tours throughout the country, Panama’s capital is a modern city edged by the Panama Canal and the Pacific Ocean that’s a fascinating destination in itself. One of its most alluring attractions is Casco Viejo, the cobblestoned historic centre with its bougainvillaea-draped plazas with bars and cafes, colonial-era landmarks such as the neoclassical Palacio Presidencial and beautifully restored colonial mansions, cathedrals, and other historic buildings, many of which have been transformed to their original glory. From the Miraflores Locks, one can watch the ships that travel the canal along the vital shipping route that links the Pacific and Atlantic.

    This small but booming harbour town is not only the gateway to renowned Manuel Antonio National Park but one of the world’s best spots for big-game sport fishing. Marlin, snapper, dorado, big eye and yellowfin tuna, wahoo, amberjack, and more can all be caught here. A tropical inlet with a rainforest backdrop, there are many other draws here too, such as horseback riding, surfing, kayaking, and canopy tours.     Situated on the Osa Peninsula, a vast swath of land jutting into the Pacific Ocean, Puerto Jiminez is arguably the best base for exploring Corcovado National Park, the largest park in Costa Rica. A biodiverse delight with abundant wildlife, tropical rainforest, and a magnificent coastline, it’s the crown jewel in the country’s extensive system of national parks and biological reserves. Not only are there multiple local touring companies for exploring it, but there are a number of things to do right here, including visiting an outstanding local crafts shop, a wildlife sanctuary, and sample cuisine, and fabulous restaurants.

  • Pearl Islands

    Pearl Islands

    The Pearl Islands, or Islas de las Perlas, are a group of some 250 islands and islets, most of which are uninhabited, situated about 30 miles off the Pacific coast of Panama in the Gulf of Panama. They were named for the many pearls found on them during the Spanish colonial period, but today they’re best known for their incredible white sandy beaches, whale watching, diving, and snorkelling, with an abundance of marine life. Few were aware of the archipelago until the reality show “Survivor” put it on the map, but you can still find plenty of tranquil spots away from the crowds.

  • Cebaco Island

    Cebaco Island

    The third-largest island in Panama, Cebaco covers nearly 20,000 acres but its population is only about 500, with most communities along its northern coast. Viewed from above, it looks like an emerald surrounded by a sea of sapphire. There are many idyllic beaches flanked with palm trees and lapped by clear turquoise waters as well as rainforest laced with waterfalls. The island is nestled between nationally protected marine areas in the Gulf of Montijo where sperm and humpback whales migrate through and four species of turtles, dolphins, and giant manta rays can be seen just offshore.

    San Jose

    The capital of Costa Rica is located in the heart of the country, known for its high quality of life. It’s both a cosmopolitan urban centre and a traditional Central American city. As the cultural hub, it’s a great place to explore museums like the Jade Museum, home to the world’s most extensive collection of American jade as well as hosting exhibits with gold, ceramics, and stonework. There are many art galleries and parks like La Sabana Metropolitan Park right downtown next to the core districts. Among its many features are a lake, lots of green space, an art museum and the national stadium.

    One of the world’s greatest engineering marvels and the largest dam on the planet, building the Panama Canal required the efforts of more than 80,000 workers and took over 30,000 lives in the process. Visitors can take in views from the Canal Expansion Observation Center which offers platforms overlooking Gatún Lake and the Atlantic locks.

    Visit Darien National Park

    Darien National Park is one of the most biodiverse places in the world. It contains an exceptionally diverse array of habitats, with upland and lowland tropical forests, mangroves, swamps, rocky coasts, and sandy beaches. It’s also home to multiple indigenous groups, including the Embera tribe known for their exquisite, handcrafted items.

    Located in Coiba National Park, Granito de Oro is ringed by palm trees, connected by fine strips of white sands, looking as if it was made for a postcard. Surrounded by crystal-clear aquamarine water, it’s one of the top spots for snorkelling, with hard coral, a wide variety of tropical fish, and hawksbill sea turtles

    Wildlife of the Osa Peninsula

    The Osa Peninsula is unsurpassed for diversity by any region of similar size in the world, home to all of Costa Rica’s big cats, monkeys, tapir, giant anteaters, and more.
