Day by Day Itinerary
Day 1 Cape Town Arrival
Your 12-night tour begins with your arrival into Cape Town where your first glimpse is likely to be of Table Mountain which towers over the city spilling down toward the southwestern tip of Africa, while the Twelve Apostles were carved into the side by the elements. You’ll be transferred to your accommodation in the city where after you check in, you might want to enjoy the many delights along the V and A Waterfront along the Atlantic shore, perhaps an introduction to the marine life at Two Oceans Aquarium or relax in lively Nobel Square, ideal for people watching and enjoying talented street performers.
Day 2 Cape Winelands Tour
The Cape Winelands lie northeast of Cape Town, with the valley covered in vineyards, quaint 19th-century farmhouses and boutique cellars. While there are hundreds of wine farms to visit, your private driver/guide will customise your tour to your tastes. You’ll tour world-famous 200-year-old vineyards and chat with winemakers to learn how the wines are produced. While you taste (the highlight is Pinotage wine, the signature grape of South Africa), you’ll enjoy picturesque views of the rugged landscape and at gourmet lunch at one of the most luxurious farms in the area. After returning to Cape Town, enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure.
Day 3 Cape Town Eats Tour & Table Mountain
This tour explores Cape Town from all sides – the history, the people, their cultures, their cuisines, as well as contemporary Cape Town. Be sure to eat a very light breakfast or no breakfast and to wear comfortable shoes. This is not a fine dining tour, it’s a real food tour to discover and sample some of the traditional cultural dishes. You will walk and explore the city from a local’s perspective.
After exploring the city on foot, you will drive to Table Mountain Cable Way Station. You will board the cable car and ascend Table Mountain in order to enjoy the views of the city from all sides. (Weather dependent)
Day 4 Cape Peninsula Tour
Today you will head south to explore the peninsula. Follow a road that’s carved into the mountain at ocean’s edge, providing endless views as you make your way to the southwestern tip of the continent. Stop for a Chapman’s Peak photo-op, enjoy atmospheric Hout Bay and then continue to admire the countless penguins at Boulders Beach that waddle across the sand and dive off the cliffs. Finally, crossing the peninsula to a pair of lighthouses that mark Africa’s edge, you’ll gaze out at the endless ocean view before returning to your hotel.
Day 5 Drakensberg Mountains
Take transfer to the airport for your flight north to Durban. On arrival you will be met by your driver who will take you into the Drakensberg Mountains. You will be immersed in the country’s heritage, with circular Zulu huts dotting hills, Bushman rock art carved into the caves and vast battlefields providing a glimpse of the Anglo-Boer war. Watch for the giraffes that freely roam and the antelope grazing on the slopes while the massive mountain peaks call in the distance. You might even see the occasional white rhino stroll by.
Day 6 Drakensberg Mountains
Enjoy a full day in the Drakensberg Mountains, gaining an understanding of why J.R.R. Tolkien saw the landscape as inspiration for the part of Middle Earth called the Misty Mountains. You’ll join a special tour that will take you through the Second Anglo-Boer War, led by a historian and a leading authority of the conflicts that took place here between 1899 and 1092. As you explore the battlefields, they’ll come alive, with your guide revealing fascinating stories about the bloody battle of Spionenkop, fought in January 1900, and the lives of Louis Botha, Winston Churchill and Gandhi all colliding.
Day 7 Thanda Private Game Reserve
Today you will be collected by your driver and be transferred to Thanda Private Game Reserve. You will stay in a villa surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature with a private plunge pool that offers wildlife views. You’ll have three days here, enjoying luxuries and exclusivity with hardly another tourist in sight. Game drives head off trail bringing incredible views of some of the most famous African mammals at close proximity. Your guide will be alerted to occurrences like leopard kills and buffaloes charging across the savannah, and you’ll get to sip champagne on your verandah watching animals like zebra saunter by.
Day 8 Thanda Private Game Reserve
Your time at Thanda continues, bringing total immersion into nature and the bush atmosphere. Like yesterday, a full range of safari activities will be enjoyed, including game drives that will showcase some of the continent’s largest mammals, and nighttime excursions revealing those that like to come out after dark.
Day 9 Thanda Private Game Reserve
Today you can take game walks around the camp that allow one to truly appreciate the scale of the creatures in the Great Plains. If a tailored wildlife photography drive appeals, that may be possible too, and you can always watch for animals right from the verandah while relaxing with a view.
Day 10 Thonga Beach Lodge
Today you will be collected and transferred to the coast to Thonga Beach Lodge.
Thonga Beach Lodge is set on the beach in the wilderness of iSimangaliso Park. With miles of empty white beach, coral reefs and lakes full of wildlife, this is a location of outstanding natural beauty. Thonga’s 12 eco-sensitive rooms are positioned to create minimal environmental impact and afford maximum privacy. They offer ocean or forest views and some rooms have private plunge pools.
Day 11 - 12 Thonga Beach
Thonga Beach has a wide range of activities available. For many people the highlight is the turtle tracking on the beach (seasonal). You head the beach at night to watch the turtles dig a hole to lay their eggs in. The area has outstanding diving and snorkeling with thousands of species of tropical fish, octopus, eels, sharks, dolphins and rays. The lodge also offers a kayaking trip to Lake Sibaya. The lake is full of hippos and crocodiles and is an area of stunning natural beauty. When you need to rest there are miles of beach for you to enjoy.
Day 13 Depart
Today you will be collected and transferred to Durban Airport for your onward flight connection.
