Top 5 tented migration camps in Tanzania

When it comes to accommodation for your African safari, there are a few different options. While you can stay in larger safari lodges, one of the most authentic ways you can enjoy a safari is by staying in a luxury tented camp. These are essentially canvassed tents, with the luxuries and amenities you’d expect from a hotel. The main draw is that you can hear the wildlife from your tented room. Whether it’s lions roaring in the distance, or antelopes walking outside your room, a luxury tented camp is, in our opinion, the best way to enjoy a safari.

More specifically, a migration tented camp is one which moves throughout the year with the location of the wildebeest herds. The safari camp has the ability to ‘pick up and move’ which means that it always offers a prime location for the wildebeest migration. Here are some of our favorites in Tanzania.

Kichakani Legendary Safari Camp

1. Kichakani Serengeti Camp

Kichakani is the tented camp in the Sanctuary Collection. The name ‘Kichakani’ translates to ‘in the bush’ in Swahili – the local and most commonly used language in Tanzania. The camp is formed of 10 luxury tented rooms, each with ensuite bathrooms featuring the classic bucket shower. The tents look out to the Serengeti plains – a landscape home to an abundance of resident wildlife including elephants, buffalo, big cats, and antelope aplenty. This moveable camp is located in northern Serengeti between June and October, and then the southern Serengeti from December to March.

Olakira Migration Camp asilia 1

2. Olakira Migration Camp

This is one of our favorite safari camps in all of Tanzania, if not Africa. Olakira Migration Camp is located in the southern plains of the Serengeti National Park between December and March, and then the northern plains from July onwards. The camp has a fantastic location in the northern plains, close to the crossing points of the Mara River, offering exceptional game viewing opportunities. The safari experience is heightened because of the unique accommodation. The tents have a mesh-covered stargazing extension, which allows you to sleep under the stars at night. A truly memorable experience in the middle of the game reserve.

Nomad Serengeti Camp

3. Nomad Serengeti Safari Camp

This luxury tented camp is part of the Nomad portfolio, offering an authentic safari experience in the heart of the Serengeti National Park. With exceptional service and guiding, this canvas tented camp offers a home-from-home experience. The 6 safari tents are environmentally conscious and have been designed for minimal environmental impact. For those who are doing a northern Tanzania circuit, it’s worth combining the other Nomad properties to take advantage of a circuit discount. These sister properties include Nomad Lamai in northern Serengeti, Kuro Camp in Tarangire National Park, and Entamanu Camp in the Ngorongoro Crater.

Legendary MigratioN Camp

4. Legendary Serengeti Camp

This camp is part of the Legendary collection, offering an authentic safari experience with unrivalled views of the Serengeti’s open plains. Game drives from Legendary Serengeti Camp are entirely private – with your own open-sided vehicle and private guide. The moveability of the camp ensures a prime location for the wildebeest migration game viewing. For those looking for something more luxurious and a more permanent safari lodge then Mwiba Lodge – its sister camp – is worth serious consideration. Located on its own private concession, close to the southern plains of the Serengeti, Mwiba Lodge is truly one of the most luxurious and breathtakingly remote lodges in Tanzania.

Ubuntu Migration Camp

5. Ubuntu Migration Camp

Another of the Asilia portfolio is Ubuntu Migration Camp. This tented camp moves across the Serengeti National Park, following the colossal herds of wildebeest and zebra. The camp is made of 8 tented rooms, which offers a close-knit safari experience. The ensuite bathrooms feature hot-water safari bucket showers. When located in northern Serengeti, you will have the opportunity to see a famous river crossing, as well as look across to Kenya’s Masai Mara.
