Day by Day Itinerary
Day 1 Palermo: Arrival into Sicily
Your 7-nights adventure begins with your arrival into Palermo’s airport where you’ll be met by your private driver for the approximately 45-minute drive to your hotel in the city center. Take time to relax and refresh before joining a three-hour guided tour of the historic sites. Palermo is renowned for its beautiful Baroque, Gothic and Romanesque architecture. Marvel at the 9th-century Palazzo dei Normanni, Europe’s oldest royal residence, and stroll down the Cassaro, the city’s oldest street to see magnificent centuries-old churches like Santa Maria dello Spasimo. Along the way, enjoy the mouthwatering street food with many delicious bites in Palermo.
Day 2 Palermo: Segway Tour and Cooking Class
With the narrow medieval streets of Palermo, a Segway is one of the best ways to get around the city. This morning you’ll take a guided tour via Segway of the top landmarks, starting with a visit to the Capo food market, popular among locals and visitors, before viewing the Gallery of Modern Art, Palace of the Normans and Piazza della Vittoria. Finish at the seaside gardens of Villa a Mare, enjoying the magnificent views. This afternoon, a 4-hour hands-on cooking class will teach you how to prepare traditional Sicilian dishes in a home kitchen before enjoying the results of your efforts with wine.
Day 3 Palermo: Day of Leisure
Explore Palermo at your own pace today, perhaps using one or more of our suggestions. Some of the top things to do here include spending the day sunbathing and swimming at Mondello Beach, browsing the works of art at Palazaao Abatellis and the Museum of tiles Stanze al Genio or exploring the 15th-century Galleria Regionale, a neo-Gothic castle filled with Renaissance and medieval art. At Museo Archaeological Regionale you can check out one of Italy’s most impressive collections of ancient Greek and Punic art along with an extensive collection of Sicilian historical artifacts. This evening you might catch a performance at Teatro Massimo.
Day 4 Taormina: City Walking Tour
Continue to your next destination, the popular hilltop town of Taormina along the Ionian Sea. This afternoon join a three-hour walking tour to see the highlights. Your guide will bring you to notable places like the 10th-century Palazzo Corvaja, the beautifully restored 17th-century Santa Caterina Church and the town’s narrowest street, the Vicolo Stretto. You’ll get to skip the line to take in the spectacular views of Giardini Naxos and Mount Etna from the Greek theater and then head to a local enoteca at the main square, Piazza IX Aprile where you’ll get to unwind with a glass of famous Mount Etna wine.
Day 5 Taormina: Mount Etna Tour
A full day tour will bring you to see Mount Etna, the largest active volcano in Europe, up close. Start at the Rifugio Sapienza where you’ll be able to rent any gear that you might need for the walk like hiking boots and then hop on the cable car, travelling up to 9,500 feet in elevation to reach Torre Del Filosofo. From there you’ll travel by Jeep and then walk to the summit which sits at 10,990 feet above sea level. You’ll be surrounded by breathtaking views of Sicily and beyond, along with the volcano’s active vents and eruptive fractures.
Day 6 Catania: Self-Guided City Tour
An hour-long transfer brings you to Catania, a seaside town located at the base of Mount Etna – although the volcano frequently erupts, the lava typically follows a similar path that avoids villages and cities dotted across the landscape below. In the 17th-century, however, an eruption managed to level Catania, which is why many of its most famous buildings were rebuilt during this time. Enjoy a self-guided tour of the highlights, discovering history at Museo Storico dello Sbarco in Sicilia 1943, touring the 16th-century Monastero dei Benedettini, visiting the San Nicolo l’Arena and relaxing in Villa Bellini park with its spectacular panoramic vistas.
Day 7 Catania Walking Food Tour
Sicily is famous for its delicious cuisine and today you’ll discover Sicilian culinary traditions on a tasting tour. Look forward to sampling specialities like Sicilian brioche, local olives and cheeses, granita (shaved ice) and cartocciata (dough wrapped around mozzarella and other fillings). You’ll enjoy a walk alongside the sea, explore the Old Town’s narrow streets and visit Duomo Square while learning about the local history from your guide. Finish at the 13th-century Ursino Castle enjoying the beautiful view. This evening we recommend strolling the main street, Via Etnea, lined with shops, cafes, and restaurants. The open-air cafes are ideal for dinner and people watching.
Day 8 Departure Day
After a week of discovering Italy’s largest island, your adventure has come to an end. You’ll have time to savour one last breakfast here before meeting private transfer for your return to the airport. If you don’t have to go home just yet, this trip is easy to add on to many others, with the options practically endless whether you want to explore more of this beautiful country or head elsewhere.
