It may be one of 17,000 islands in the Indonesian archipelago, Bali stands out with words like “paradise” and “nirvana” often used to describe it. Only about 1.5 miles from the eastern tip of Java, just west of Lombok, this lush island is an ideal destination for travelers on a budget as well as those with money to spend.
Many come for the beautiful beaches, diving, surfing, and activity-filled resorts, it offers much more than a sun-soaked retreat. From the vibrant nightlife in Kuta to soaring mountains laced with waterfalls and sparkling lakes, verdant rice fields, ancient temples, and exotic wildlife, not to mention the out-of-this-world food and drink, it’s on many travelers’ bucket lists.
While the beauty might take the spotlight, the locals with their genuine, warm smiles and incredible hospitality make Bali a place that many feel compelled to visit again and again.
Where to start? Discover Ubud for art and rice terraces, Uluwatu for stunning cliffs, Seminyak for vibrant nightlife, and Nusa Dua for luxurious resorts. The central heartlands of Sidemen and Munduk offer lush adventures, while the quiet beaches such as Manggis and Sanur offer sun-soaked relaxation.
The cultural and artistic heart of Bali, Ubud offers world-beating accommodations, spa, and dining, set amongst lush rice terraces, vibrant markets, and sacred temples.
The serene highland regions around Munduk enchant with lush coffee plantations, serene waterfalls, and a tranquil atmosphere, offering respite from the island’s bustling coastal areas.
The tranquil north-western coast of Bali is known for its pristine beaches and vibrant coral reefs. Nearby Menjangan Island offers exceptional diving experiences amidst diverse marine life.
This laidback coastal resort was the original Bali beach destination. Calm beaches, a scenic promenade, and high-class accommodations make it a compelling destination spot to this day.
Contrasting Seminyak exudes chic sophistication, a busier but upscale beach area featuring trendy beach clubs, designer boutiques, and a lively dining scene.
Over on the east coast, Candi Dasa is a tranquil and pristine beach area, with a serene waterfront, excellent snorkeling, and a laidback atmosphere.
Sitting close to the Equator, Bali has a tropical climate that offers hot weather year-round. The best time to visit Bali is during the drier months from April to October. May to August offers particularly pleasant weather, making it ideal for outdoor activities and beach excursions. The wetter months from November to March, bring occasional heavy rains, but it’s also when the island is at its most lush and green.
Keep in mind that Bali is a popular destination, so if you prefer fewer crowds, consider planning your trip during the shoulder months of April, May, September, or October when the weather is still favorable, and the tourist influx is lower.

Bali is a travel paradise both on land and underwater. Inland Bali’s soaring volcanoes, lush jungles, and rolling rice terraces give way to wide beaches, both white sand and volcanic black sand, which circle the island on all sides.
Situated in the heart of Southeast Asia’s Coral Triangle, the island is surrounded by reefs, wrecks, and coral gardens which are pure heaven for underwater explorers. We take you through Bali’s very best snorkel spots below; some of which are dedicated day trips, while many are found immediately in front of your island resort.
The north and east of Bali feel like a completely different island to the busy south.
While the south’s best beaches - Nusa Dua, Jimbaran Bay, Seminyak, and Kuta beaches - are popular and well-maintained, the north and east offer a wilder and more authentic slice of Balinese life.
Underwater treasures, attractive villages, breathtaking temples are all just as much of a feature, but there are also far fewer other tourists around to share them with.
Here’s our guide to the best areas in the north and east of Bali in which to base yourself.
The ‘Island of Gods’ is a natural paradise: soaring volcanoes, dense jungles, beautiful rice fields, kaleidoscopic corals, and miles upon miles of black and white sand beaches.
Bali is also a cultural haven. The Balinese have thrived as a distinctly different culture to the rest of Indonesia: largely Hindu, known for their easy-going, intelligent manner. Key to all Balinese life is the concept of ‘Tri Hita Karana’, a philosophy of harmony in three key tenets: harmony with nature, with other humans, and with god.
Bali’s lush, emerald rice terraces are not only scenically stunning but also an illustration of these harmonious principles. With an ingenious subak irrigation system honed over centuries, they are both highly functional, and aesthetically pleasing, working with nature to bring sustenance to the people and joy to gods.
All of Bali’s rice terraces are protected under the UNESCO World Heritage scheme, owing to their ubiquity and their deep cultural ties to the Balinese. We’ve put together a list of our favorite rice terrace areas on the island below.
Just the mention of Bali summons up visions of tropical paradise. The ‘Island of the Gods’ is one of the world’s great travel destinations: rich in culture, adventure, alluring scenery, and magnificent hotels.
Whether you’re looking for culture, adventure, scenery, or relaxation, there’s a perfect Bali itinerary to suit. We recommend spending a solid two weeks in Bali to make sure you get the best of the island, but with so much on offer, it can be hard to know where to start.
